Our
hearts, prayers and sympathy goes out to the Hughes family. Carol Hughes, wife

Miss Madison's biggest booster and she will be missed.

Memories of Carol
Hughes...
You
will notice in reading Harlan's message that it became our
initial update to the site. He
sent the news out early and we thank him for putting our grief
into words at a time when we needed the help.
Sad
news. Carol Hughes, wife of Miss Madison president, Bob Hughes,
died Friday at Jewish
Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. Services will be at 11 am Monday
at Vail-Holt Funeral Home in Madison. Visitation will be
Sunday from 3pm to 7 pm and after 9 am on Monday. I know the hydroplane
fraternity's thoughts will be with Bob at this time. Carol was,
indeed, Miss M's biggest booster.

HydroWorld,
Scott Tebbe's site, remained dark for 48 hours to show its deepest
sympathy for
the Hughes' family loss of Carol. Carol Hughes, wife of Miss
Madison president and president of Clifty Engineering, Bob Hughes,
died Friday at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. She
was on the list for a heart transplant before her passing.
Carol
Hughes was a facet of and will always be a facet on the Miss Madison
Racing Team. No
one can forget her smile and love for the team, the sport and for
the City of Madison. The good luck troll given to Mike Hanson
before winning from the trailer position in San Diego aboard the
Miss Madison entry was from Carol. She loved racing and in
fact, her favorite NASCAR driver was Jeff Gordon.
I
will always remember her laughter and joy for life and the times
she called me "paperboy" (I
was their neighborhood Madison Courier paperboy when I
was young). I will cherish each and every memory and will
never forget you, Carol.
On
behalf of the Freedom Festival Foundation of Evansville, the Unlimited
Light Excalibur
Team, and my family, we offer our deepest sympathy and thoughts
to Carol's loving husband Bob and to their family. May she
rest in peace.
In Memory of Carol Hughes
Feb. 25, 1936 - Nov. 26, 1999
This morning, I attended
the funeral of Carol Hughes, wife of MISS MADISON Board Chairman
Bob Hughes, in Madison, Indiana.
Carol was well known and
loved in the hydroplane community. She will be missed. She was
MISS MADISON's most dedicated fan.
The service was very moving
and very dignified. Bob himself delivered the eulogy. MISS MADISON
crew chief Charlie Grooms and former MISS MADISON driver Mike Hanson
were among the pall bearers.
Thanks,
Carol, for being such a good friend to all of us.

A
few years ago I send Mike Hanson an email inquiring "What's
the story behind the Troll doll in the front windshield of Miss
Madison?"
Mike's
reply was: "The
Troll doll was a good luck gift from Carol Hughes at the first
event of the 1993 season, and has been in the cockpit with me ever
since."
This past season I recall
seeing that Troll doll still in the Miss Madison .. . and now,
besides the luck of the Troll, Carol will be there looking down
upon all who will pilot the Miss Madison and Her team.
My condolences and deepest
sympathies to Bob, Carols family and all of her close friends.

With the birth
of my fourth child and my recent ill health, I had not checked
my email for quite some
time. It was with great disappointment that I learned of
the passing of Carol Hughes. Though I did not know her outside
of uboats, I do have one very found memory of her.
I can't remember
where or when I first met her, but I do remember her carrying around
a rope in the pit. As
we watched the heats, I was standing next to her and noticed she
was tying knots in the rope. I asked her if she was excited
or nervous to which she explained she was both and came to find
out that she was tying one knot in the rope as each lap was completed. We
then had opportunities to discuss uboats during many a Seafair
as I stayed at the same motel as the Madison team and found her
to be quite an extraordinary person in addition to what I use to
deem her as a hydro queen.
She will be greatly missed, and i hope
she has found rest and peace and comfort in the presence of our
Lord!
I sent these thoughts to those of you
whom I thought would appreciate them most and to let all of you
know that I too mourn along with you.
