Miss Madison's Race Day in Barrie Ends Early

6:27 PM - As quoted on the hydros.org site, “I was going down the backstretch and everything was great and there was plenty of room.  I set the boat for the turn then it started getting real tight with the boat on the outside. I hit the roostertail from the skid fin and managed to get over that. Then I hit the larger roostertail and the boat just climbed it like it was still in the water and over I went. It was a very soft landing, but man was the water cold.” - Todd Yarling

5:23 PM - From early indications, the damage to the Miss Madison is still an unknown.  The boat is still upside down, but the team has borrowed Bud's lifting strap designed to turn the boat over.  At this point they have the boat up out of the water and are still assessing the situation.   The team won't know the full extent of the damage until they really get into the boat.  We will get a more detailed update later this evening.

4:38 PM - It looks like Todd may have taken a roostertail ride to initiate the flip.  The boat remains upside down, but it is back in the pit docks.  Todd is reported to be fine and walking around the pit area.

3:16 PM - Cindy just got off the phone with the the team.  The boat is still making its way back to the shore at this point.  The team is saddened to say the least.  We could not get a clear read on the details of the incident, but it appears it floated up and over and when it landed Todd didn't feel the hit, so for a flip it was a soft landing.  There is damage to the Miss Madison (they did retrieve the cowling and an upright along with the boat), but we don't yet know the extent or the impact this may have on the season.

2:41 PM - We regret to report that the Miss Madison has fliped in Barrie.  We are depending on the word of Jim Hendricks and have yet to hear from the team, but it is clear that the Miss Madison has flipped in the #2 turn of the course. After hitting some rough water the boat got light and went over. The boat is stuck upside down on what sounds like a sandbar. We'll post more details as we hear them.

Earlier today - Miss Madison placed second in heat 2B.  Another great finish for Todd Yarling and the entire Miss Madison team!  Heat 2A and 2B results along with heat 3A and 3B draws are available below.  Earlier this morning, the team took their first heat win in Heat 1A, with Todd leading wire-to-wire.  Way to go Todd!!!

Miss Madison in Barrie: Day 2

6/19/99 -- Miss Madison had a pretty good day.  We were able to raise our qualifying speed by 2 mph and Todd had a chance to test the boat under race conditions.  Due to the amount of fans on the shore today for Unlimited testing and Unlimited light racing, the UHRA decided to run an Unlimited shootout.  The top 4 boats were invited to run in the exhibition, which included the Miss Madison.  Lane choice was determined by qualifying speed, so Miss Madison had the outside lane.  The shootout was won by Miss Budweiser.  On the cool down lap, Miss Madison was washed down by the Bud.  Following the boats’ return to shore, appropriate apologies were made and no real damage was done to the boat.  We’re looking forward to tomorrow’s racing.  The draws for heats 1A and 1B are as follows:

Heat 1A: U-3, U-9, U-2, U-8, and U-6
Heat 1B: U-1, U-100, U-10, and U-15

Miss Madison in Barrie: Day 1

6/18/99 -- Miss Madison's day got off to a slow start on the water.   The Barrie location has more than the course layout (a tri-oval design) as an interesting feature. Try getting cranes to stay level in deep, coarse sand!  The team was held up quite a while waiting for the crane to reposition itself so that the boat could be placed at the end of the dock -- the only place the water was deep enough.   The first time they put the boat in, it buried the skid fin in the bottom of the lake.  When the crane was finally positioned, the skid fin had about two inches of clearance.  All the boats and trucks are in sand and the camps have laid huge tarps and plywood around for stability.  Another delay on the day was due to PICO taking out a buoy in the tight corner.  The team had to wait while the buoy was replaced.

Once Todd was out on the water, he posted the fourth fastest qualifying speed (140.735 mph).  The boat looked beautiful as it handled the unusual course.  He was heard saying after one run that he needed more speed (doesn't every hydro driver!).
