8/16/01...

It was a challenge to get the team here as flights have been cancelled left and right.  Given the sad week our country has suffered through, this is understandable and no one was complaining.  By the time Saturday morning rolled around, we had a full crew manning the U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto.

Bypassing the morning test session, we put in speeds of 132.667, 136.225 in qualification round one.  The team worked on the boat through qualification round two and three.  We look forward to the first heat tomorrow.

As the 2001 season comes to a close, the U-6 went out quietly.

In Heat 1B, the Oh Boy! Oberto met up with a roostertail and lost power.  Unable to restart, she was towed back to the pits following the heat.

Missing her rear view mirrors from the prior heat, the U-6 went back into the hunt in Heat 2A.  What at first looked like a marvelous start saw the red, white and green hull leading the field.  Regrettably, it was determined by the second lap that the leaders had jumped the gun and been penalized a lap.  In the final moments of this race, driver Steve David enjoyed a good battle with Jimmy King and the U-8 Llumar Window Film.  Steve eventually pulled ahead to take the fourth place spot.

Heat 3B would see the highest finish of the day for the U-6 as the team took third.  Getting better with each heat, the U-6 simply appeared to run out of time in San Diego.  Though everyone put in a lot of solid work this weekend, it just wasn't enough to make the final.

Our coverage will focus on the U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison team.  For all the details live from the event, be sure to visit the series website, www.hydroprop.com/hydros/.
