All the latest news from Madison!
7/6/01 ... 7/7/01 ... We had a real surprise today as former U-6 pilot, Charley Wiggins, joined us in the pits and went right to work with the team. Charley retired following rough rides in Evansville and Detroit during the 2000 season, but it was clear that he missed the racing life. He's not missing the driving duties, but he certainly looked at home working with the team once again, offering driver Steve David tips on handling the hull, locking him into the cockpit and working with Charlie Grooms on the radios. In round one of the time trials, the U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto (aka Miss Madison) put in speeds of 140.691 and 141.130. 143.729 and 143.596 in round two. 138.615 and 139.181 in round three. The team worked into the night (before and after the fireworks) and we will have an inboat (ESPN2) camera on the hull for race day. 7/8/01 ... That would certainly not be the end of the day's excitement. The U-6 was destined to write another page in the history books before this day was done. In Heat 2, the U-6 took another win. In Heat 3, the U-6 finished second. In the final... we'll lets just say the city went wild as the hometown boat took home the checkered flag to tears a cheers from all who watched.
