Miss Madison/Oh Boy! Oberto Leads Beef Jerky Battle

KENT, WASH. (Sept. 1,2000)--The Beef Jerky Battle continues in the upcoming unlimited hydroplane race scheduled for Sept. 15-17 on San Diego's Mission Bay, the last race of the season.

The Miss Madison, complete with its dashing new Oh Boy! Oberto Beef Jerky paint scheme leads the beef jerky battle against the Lowrey's Big Beef Jerky hydroplane which is sponsored by another beef jerky brand of Oberto Sausage Co.

Nate Brown, driver of the U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto-Beef Jerky captured the lead by placing fourth in the last hydroplane race, the G.M. Cup at Seattle.  The Lowrey's boat road over the top of another boat's roostertail while entering the first turn of heat 2A.  The boat was so damaged that the Lowrey's team had to withdraw from competition.

In the first race of the Beef Jerky Battle, the two teams went head-to-head in the final race in the Columbia Cup in late July. Oberto placed third to Lowrey's second place finish.

Brown said he is ready to defend his lead against George Stratton, driver of the U-5 Lowrey's Big Beef Jerky.  Brown said he feels the Oberto boat has the advantage because George Stratton, driver of the Lowrey Beef Jerky hydro is not only a rookie this season but this is his first race in a salt water race.

The Mission Bay race course is the first and only race this season that the HYDRO-PROP series race on salt water.  In the past, salt water has proven to be a deterrent to the turbine engines because the salt accumulates on the blades of the turbine engines which can cause damage to the motors.

The U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto will be equipped with a special "salt water scoop" to help eliminate the accumulation of salt on the motors.  Charlie Grooms, team manager for the Oh Boy! Oberto said, the scoop is "painted and ready for war". Grooms said, "we all know what this boat can do in salt water," referring to the team's 1993 victory in San Diego.
